Passage-1

All her life, Mrs. Foster has an almost pathological fear of missing a train, a plane, a boat, or even a theatre curtain. In other respects, she was not a particularly nervous women, but the mere thought of being late on occasions like these would throw her into such a state of nerves that she would begin to twitch. At least half an hour before it was time to leave the house for the station, Mrs. Foster would step out of the elevator all ready to go, with hat and coat and gloves, and then, being quite unable to sit down, she would flutter and fidget about from room to room until her husband, who must have been well aware of her state, finally emerged from his privacy and suggested in a cool dry voice that perhaps they had better be going now, had they not?

Mr. Eugene Foster, who was nearly seventy years old, lived with his wife in a large six storey house in New York City, on East Sixty-second Street, and they had four servants. It was a gloomy place, and few people came to visit them. But on this particular morning in January, the house had come alive and there was a great deal of bustling about. One maid was distributing bundles of dust sheet to every room, while another was draping them over the furniture. The butler was bringing down suitcases and putting them in the hall. The cook kept popping up from the kitchen to have a word with the butler, and Mrs. Foster herself, in an old-fashioned fur coat and with a black hat on the top of her head, was flying from room to room and pretending to supervise these operations. Actually, she was thinking of nothing at all except that she was going to miss her plane if her husband didn’t come out of his study soon and get ready.

The Russian gentleman was better the next day, and the day after that better still and on the third day he was well enough to come into the garden. A basket chair was put for him and he sat there, dressed in clothes of Father’s which were too big for him. But when Mother had hemmed up the ends of the sleeves and the trousers, the clothes did well enough. His was a kind face now that it was no longer tired and frightened, and he smiled at the children whenever he saw them. They wished very much that he could speak English. Mother wrote several letters to people she thought might know whereabouts in England a Russian gentleman’s wife and family might possibly be; not to the people she used to know before she came to live at live at Three Chimneys – she never wrote to any of them. And she did not do much of her story-writing, only corrected proofs as she sat in the sun near the Russian, and talked to him every now and then. The children wanted very much to show how kindly they felt to this man who had been sent to prison and to Siberia just for writing a beautiful book about poor people. They could smile at him, of course; they could and they did.

Passage-3

Once upon a time, there was a poor orphan boy called Dick Whittington. The people in his village believed that the streets of London were paved with gold. So Dick decided to travel there and become a rich man. Dick walked for many days, but when he arrived in London there were no streets of gold! Tired and hungry, he fell asleep on the steps of a great house. The house belonged to a rich businessman who found Dick and gave him a job cleaning the kitchen.

Dick worked very hard and was happy. He had enough to eat and at night he could sleep by the fire. There was a problem though! At night, rats ran around the kitchen and kept him awake. So Dick went out and found the fastest rat-catching cat in London! The cat caught all the rats that came into the house and Dick could sleep at night.

The businessman heard about the amazing cat and asked Dick if he could take it on his ship to catch rats on his next journey. Dick agreed, but was very sad to see the cat go. While the businessman was away, the other servants were very mean to Dick, so Dick decided to run away. But as he was leaving, one of the great church bells rang. It seemed to say, “Turn back, Dick Whittington, Mayor of London!”

So Dick came back to the house and soon the businessman returned. He was very happy because Dick’s cat had caught all the rats on the ship. He gave Dick a reward and promoted him to his assistant. Dick worked hard for the businessman and learned everything he could. Eventually he married the businessman’s daughter and started a very successful business of his own. And, yes, he did become Mayor of London!

Elizabeth was born nearly 500 years ago, in 1533. Her father, King Henry VIII, has six wives. When Elizabeth was two, her father ordered her mother’s execution. ‘Off with her head!’ Elizabeth was very clever, but she had a difficult childhood with her bad-tempered father and so many stepmothers. She was put in prison in the Tower of London for two months when she was twenty. Elizabeth became queen in 1558.

‘Your sister is dead. You are new queen.’ The English people liked Elizabeth and called her ‘Good Queen Bess’. But Elizabeth was often bad tempered and bossy. “I said give me my wig!” Elizabeth sent explores sailing around the world. In 1577, Sir Francis Drake set sail in his ship, the Pelican. ‘Goodbye, Francis. Discover some new countries and bring me back some Spanish treasure!”

In 1588, the Spanish king sent a huge fleet of ships to attack England. It was called ‘the Spanish Armada”. Elizabeth gave a famous speech to inspire her army. My loving people! I know I have the body of a weak woman, but I have the heart and stomach of a king. I will live or die amongst you all, but I know we shall have a famous victory!’ Spain lost the battle.

Elizabeth’s cousin, Mary, was Queen of Scotland. Mary had to run away from Scotland and she asked Elizabeth to protect her. ‘Please protect me, Elizabeth!’ Elizabeth was afraid that Mary wanted to become Queen of England. She locked Mary up. Nineteen years later she ordered Mary’s execution. ‘Off with her head!” Elizabeth was queen for 45 years. It was a golden age for England. Passage-5

Late at night, guards on the battlements of Denmark’s Elsinore castle are met by Horatio, Prince

Hamlet’s friend from school. The guards describe a ghost they have seen that resembles Hamlet’s father, the recently-deceased king. At that moment, the Ghost reappears, and the guards and Horatio decide to tell Hamlet.

Claudius, Hamlet’s uncle, married Hamlet’s recently-widowed mother, becoming the new King of Demark. Hamlet continues to mourn for his father’s death and laments his mother’s lack of loyalty. When Hamlet hears of the Ghost from Horatio, he wants to see it for himself. Elsewhere, the royal attendant Polonius says farewell to his son Laertes, who is departing for France. Laertes warns his sister, Ophelia away from Hamlet and thinking too much of his attentions towards her. The Ghost appears to Hamlet, claiming indeed to be the ghost of his father. He tells Hamlet about how Claudius, the current King and Hamlet’s uncle, murdered him, and Hamlet swears vengeance for his father. Hamlet decides to feign madness while he tests the truth of the Ghost’s allegations (always a good idea in such situations).
According to his plan, Hamlet begins to act strangely. He rejects Ophelia, while Claudius and Polonius, the royal attendant, spy on him. They had hoped to find the reason for Hamlet’s sudden change in behaviour but could not Claudius summons Guildenstern and Rosencrantz, old friends of Hamlet to find out what’s got into him. Their arrival coincides with a group of travelling actors that Hamlet happens to know well. Hamlet writes a play which includes scenes that mimic the murder of Hamlet’s father. During rehearsal, Hamlet and the actors plot to present Hamlet’s play before the King and Queen. Questions-
